On June 1, 2011, the opening of Morton Hall removal centre in Lincolnshire was officially announced by the UK Immigration Minister Damian Green, increasing capacity in the detention estate as the government intensifies enforcement activity across the country.
When the centre is full, the former prison will accommodate 392 men including illegal over-stayers and failed asylum seekers as well as foreign national prisoners in order to facilitate their removal from the UK.
With immigration removal centres (IRCs), the UK Border Agency is able to detain people while organizing their removal from the UK. They also ensure that foreign national prisoners due for deportation are not able to remain in the community before they are removed. More than 16,500 people were removed from the UK directly from removal centres last year.
According to UK Immigration Minister Damian Green, the tough system of enforcement and removal was one of the cornerstones of the reformed UK immigration system. It was not only a welcome addition to the UK Border Agency's estate but also help them "remove more individuals who have no right to be here."
"Let the message be clear, the UK is no longer an easy touch for illegal immigrants. We are reforming the system to make it more effective to ensure those with no right to be here are removed." Damian stated.
The IRC has accepted the first detainees last month and it will be fully operational by September this year.
The opening of new centre helps UK Border Agency hold up to 3,400 people in detention at any one time. It means that more foreign nationals who illegally immigrate to the UK will be moved here in the coming years.
As well, the announcing of additional space for detention is a result of enhanced enforcement activity of UK Border Agency across the country to crackdown on the people organising and driving immigration crime like those working in the UK illegally, having sham marriages and bogus colleges.
