The UK should upgrade migration data management to improve its immigration system, says a report by parliament's home affairs committee.
The report which referred to student visas says that the government has not provided a simple method of counting foreign people leaving and entering the UK. Most of released figures are based on data from a variety of different sources collected by the Office for National Statistics.
"We have consistently argued for immigration policy to be evidence-based and have made recommendations concerning immigration statistics in three of our reports in this parliament alone," says the committee.
Additionally, the report highlights that the current E-Borders will make some benefits for the UK immigration system. However, it has not fulfilled its goal to provide more accurate information about migration in UK.
The UK government introduced E-Borders in 2005. The programme involves the collection of biometrics on visitors to the UK, the generation of vast information stores on all UK visitors, and a profiling system to identify those worthy of further scrutiny.
It also suggests that the award of the e-Borders contract to Raytheon and IBM should enhance migration policy based on actual migration figures.
According to chair of the committee, Keith Vaz: "The Government appears to be not only making policy without adequate immigration statistics, but also ignoring its own evidence." He added the existing system of immigration had problems that needed to be solved.
The National Archives may also benefit from data management improvements as it recently announced plans to help local authorities store information they release online, for the sake of future UK residents.
