Government policy makers should take regional labour market needs into account when making changes to the UK immigration system as many companies in the North-East find it hard to recruit native skilled workers, according to the North East Chamber of Commerce (NECC).
NECC, the leading North-East business organization which represents more than 4,000 companies in the region, has recently conducted a workforce survey that showed the dependence of many companies with over 50-employee scale on overseas workers.
According to NECC Chief Executive, James Ramsbotham, many companies in the region have faced a lack of skilled labour and have to seek to recruit skilled workers from overseas, especially from outside the EU. The survey found that almost half companies with more than 50 employees in the North-East are hiring immigrant workers.
"With unemployment expected to peak at 2.77m in 2012, business is expected to play its part in creating growth and jobs. The research shows that many firms are unable to find the skilled workers they need in the UK.
"It is vital that we improve skills in the North East to meet the needs of business, but this will take time and firms need the freedom to bring the best people into the region's workforce rather than lose out to competitors elsewhere. For some, hiring workers from overseas allows them to access the skills they need," Ramsbotham stated.
He therefore said that Government policy should take into account regional, not just national, labour market needs and available skills and loose immigration controls for companies to bring overseas workers into the UK".
"The bottom line is that firms in the North East can't always find the skills they need in the UK, and so the Government must make it simpler to recruit them from overseas."
