The importance of holding families for short periods at UK ports and airports in small numbers of cases to protect the border and interest of vulnerable children has been reiterated by the UK Border Agency on October 17, 2011.
On occasion, families may be required to remain in on-site accommodation while enquiries are made to establish whether they should be admitted to the UK (or, if they have no right to enter the UK) to the time of the next available return flight.
Families in this situation will stay together at the recently refurbished family suites at Tinsley House, near Gatwick airport, if overnight accommodation is required. The UK Border Agency will also consider working with social services to arrange alternative accommodation for unaccompanied and vulnerable children.
Head of the UK Border Agency's border force, Mr Brodie Clark indicated that the department had always been clear about these actions because "Not doing so would weaken border security by allowing people into the country who have no right to be here, and, equally, to release unaccompanied children before social workers have arrived to support them would put them at great risk."
A new process for managing families who have lived in the UK illegally for some time has also been introduced by the government. The process has been designed to encourage those families to leave voluntarily without any enforcement action.
If the family does not follow the available option and the UK Border Agency need to enforce them to return, a new type of pre-departure accommodation named Cedars can be used to hold them for a very short period.
