According to the latest news from the Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), a bilateral program signed between the UK and Taiwan will allow young Taiwanese to participate in a working holiday program in the UK from next year.
The bilateral program, under the UK's Youth Mobility Scheme, will offer up to 1,000 multiple-entry visas to the UK to Taiwanese youths aged between 18 and 30. The maximum duration for Taiwanese to live in the UK would be 2 years.
Six other countries (Australia,Canada, Germany, Japan, New Zealand and South Korea have signed working holiday agreements with Taiwan, but the UK is the first to allow Taiwanese participants to stay for up to two years.
Young Taiwanese participating in the scheme can opt to work in the UK either full-time or part-time. They can also serve as volunteers or pursue study in the UK. However, successful applicants are not permitted to start their own businesses, join professional sports teams or work as medical interns.
Chang Siao-yue, Taiwan's representative to the UK, stated that the key for the UK sealing the pact with Taiwan was the good quality of Taiwanese tourists and students, as well as Taiwan's economic strength. In 2009, the UK became the first European country to give Taiwanese visitors visa-waiver treatment.
Under the arrangement, 1,000 British youths may also be granted visas to visit Taiwan and experience Taiwanese customs and culture for up to a year.
