More than 27,000 immigrants were granted U.S. citizenship during naturalization ceremonies across the country and around the world.
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) held 285 naturalization ceremonies during the week of Sep 15, 2011. Ceremonies that welcomed more than 27,000 new American citizens are national events to memorize U.S. Constitution Day and Citizenship Day. Partnering with the USCIS in holding ceremonies at 14 national park sites across the country was the National Park Service (NPS).
According to the USCIS Director Alejandro Mayorkas, Constitution Day and Citizenship Day are held every year as a memorial to the signing of the U.S. Constitution. This day also reminds new U.S. citizens of the pride to be a citizen of a great nation.
"We continue to be enriched by our diversity and united by our shared respect for the foundational rights and responsibilities enshrined in the Constitution." Mr. Mayorkas added.
The NPS sites also helped introduce the country's natural wonders and treasured historic sites to U.S. immigrants. NPS Director Jonathan Jarvis said: "I can't think of places more appropriate to welcome our newest citizens than national parks,".The reason behind choosing the national parks as places for ceremonies lies in the significance of national parks to the U.S.A. The NPS Director confirmed that: "National parks preserve significant natural resources and cultural heritage sites, and are places where one can learn about and reflect on the American identity and the responsibilities of citizenship."
USCIS also hosted ceremonies at Golden Hall in San Diego, the National Archives in Atlanta and Boston, and the Campbell Heritage Theater in California, in addition to a military naturalization ceremony on the USS North Carolina in Wilmington, N.C.
