The implementation of a new immigration law in Alabama will be temporarily delayed after a U.S. District Judge grants a temporary injunction against it.
On August 29, U.S. District Judge Sharon Blackburn granted a temporary injunction against Alabama's new immigration law which was due to be implemented on September 1.
The new immigration law would mandate schools to check the immigration status of students as they enrol to study in the US state of Alabama. The proposed law also means that giving a ride or leasing a room to an undocumented worker would be a crime. Furthermore, police officers of the state will be required to detain a person if they have reasonable suspicion that they are an illegal immigrant.
The Alabama immigration law has been opposed by the U.S. Justice Department and other foreign groups, such as immigration advocacy organizations and some churches in the state. The groups claim that the state law would interfere with U.S. immigration enforcement.
According to Ms. Sharon Blackburn, her decision to grant an injunction was separate from the motions made by any of the parties in the lawsuit. She also added that she would issue a longer decision after spending time studying the constitutionality of the legislation.
"This is an issue that should be treated with great care, given the enormous impact this legislation will have on our state," Democratic Chairman Mark Kenedy responded to the judge's decision.
