Under a newly passed minute to a budget bill, US citizens in Texas are now required to prove their citizenship, legal status before receiving their first or renewing an old driver's license.
According to the new amendment, officers of Texas Department of Public Safety are required to ask those planning to get driver's license or renew it for information about their US citizenship or legal status - with something like a passport of birth certificate.
Sponsoring for the new amendment, Senator Tommy Williams (R-The Woodlands) said it was very important because driver's license in Texas was a secure form of identification, "we use it to board airplanes and that sort of thing".
Williams believed that Texans with documents on file like a birth certificate or a social security card would not need to show verification again.
"If there is no record of your lawful presence in the U.S. then they're gonna require that when you renew your license. And everybody gets treated the same," explained Williams.
The measure is meant to cut down on illegal immigration to US. But groups like the Austin Immigrant Rights Coalition see further problems for even people living in US legally. Esther Reyes from the group stated that US immigration law was so complex. Somebody might not be able to prove their immigration status, even if they were here legally.
However, the measure would allow US immigrants on short-term visas to acquire driving privileges. It would also let legal immigrants get driver's licenses - that look the same as citizens' licenses, removing that "illegal stigma".
