December 29, 2011, according to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, the U.S. established a telephone hotline for detained immigrants.
The new hotline will help detained immigrants to fully understand their rights. In many cases, U.S. immigrants who are detained by state or local law enforcement agencies can use the hotline to report if they are wrongfully subjected to immigration-related detainment.
The hotline was followed by a recent controversial detainment of four U.S. citizens who were caught in California and held for days under federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement authority. The Federal immigration agents did not have the right to detain U.S. citizens.
In addition to introducing the hotline, ICE unveiled a new document that provides information on the agency's detention policies for detained immigrants. ICE stated that both hotline and new form were part of a broader effort to improve the U.S. immigration enforcement process and prioritize resources to focus on threats to public safety. ICE added that this method would help to strengthen oversight of the nation's immigration detention system and facilitate legal immigration to the U.S.
According to the release of the Department of Homeland Security, the new measure will ensure that detained individuals "are made aware of their rights" or "properly notified about their potential removal from the country".
Detained immigrants can use the new toll-free hotline (855) 448-6903 if they believe they may be U.S. citizens or victims of a crime. The hotline will be operated 24 hours a day and seven days a week by ICE personnel at the Law Enforcement Support Center. ICE will translate services into several languages. Besides, ICE personnel will collect information from the individual and refer it to the relevant ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Field Office for immediate action.
