Florida's tourism has seen a modest growth this year thanks to a big influx of visitors from Brazil and a stunning post-oil-spill rebound by Panhandle beaches.
According to the state tourism agency Visit Florida, the number of travelers to the state increased by 5 percent compared with the previous year. Strong growth in the fourth quarter helped the state record 84 million visitors, a new record since before the recession.
Tourism is the leading industry in Florida and creates nearly 1 million jobs in the U.S.. Florida's tourism industry makes up more than one-fifth of the state's total sales tax revenue.
Visit Florida's chief Chris Thompson stated that," The 2011 numbers are a pretty clear indication that although we're not totally out of the economic challenges that we've been facing for the last three or four years, maybe people see a little bit of a light at the end of the tunnel".
Visitors from Latin America, especially Brazil, are traditional visitors to the state and visitor spending from Brazil has surpassed the United Kingdom to become the second top spenders.
Denise Arencibia, director of Latin America outreach for Visit Florida explained that Latin American countries like Brazil had maintained a more stable economy than Europe and the U.S. "What's happening is that Brazilians who have never been able to travel abroad before because they didn't have the means financially all of a sudden do have the means," clarified the director.
Main attractions in Florida are theme parks, shopping centers and nightlife experiences. The Florida Panhandle beaches, which together with other Gulf Coast shores, were damaged by the BP oil spill have come back with year with record seasons.
