The mayor shared that he wanted to make Chicago the most immigrant-friendly city in the world and believed that the Office of New Americans would help each US immigrant with necessary and important resources such as education, public safety, health and municipal services.
The tasks of the office include the creation of partnerships with community organizations, educational institutions and the private sector.
The new office will ensure enough information for the recently arrived immigrants to become productive members of society. The office will also promote the acquisition of US citizenship by eligible immigrants.
The office will encourage better coordination between municipal government and community organizations to increase access to the US existing programs on the municipal, state and federal levels.
Moreover, the office will facilitate the establishment of businesses headed by immigrant businessmen and entrepreneurs.
In order to help immigrants integrate into the US community, the office will also provide free English instruction at community colleges and other adult education centers.
