According to agreements signed on August 29, 2011 with the U.S Labor Department, migrant workers from Costa Rica, El Salvador and the Dominican Republic will be better informed of their labor rights, including receiving information about workers compensation, wage-and-hour laws and other labor protections.
The new agreement added the Ambassadors of Costa Rica, El Salvador and the Dominican Republic to protect the rights of migrant workers in the U.S, together with three other Latin American Ambassadors from Mexico, Guatemala and Nicaragua.
Under the agreement, consulates from these countries will distribute information about regulations to their citizens working in the U.S. from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and other U.S. labor agencies.
At the signing ceremony, the U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis stated that:" No matter how you got here or how long you plan to stay, you have certain rights". She clarified that foreign workers in the U.S. would have the right to work in a safe and healthy workplace and the right to receive a legal wage. She also ensured that the Labor Department would not share with other agencies the details of workers who seek information.
In respond to the new agreement, Arturo Sarukhan, the Mexican ambassador to the U.S. said that providing the law for workers immigrating to the U.S. could help prevent companies from easily exploiting them.
Even if undocumented workers were deported from the U.S., they were already granted legal wages for work performed there, said Terri Cruz, a social service counselor in Phoenix. She added that the Labor Department used to work with her organization to help migrants receive wages in cases when they were deported from the U.S. before being paid.
