According to latest announcement on Thursday, US Government is starting a new nationwide initiative to crack down on immigration-related scams that charge immigrants for bogus services.
U.S Immigration officials said that this is the first time a crackdown on fake immigration lawyers has been coordinated broadly among federal, state and local law enforcement and immigration agencies. The initiative targets immigration scams involving fake immigration lawyers representing unsuspecting clients on immigration matters, the federal departments and agencies said in a jointly issued release.
The scams often result in people who are in the country illegally being suckered into paying money to gain their US immigration status such as US Citizenship or Green Card when that's not an option. But sometimes immigrants who would be eligible to live in the U.S. get ripped off, turning their efforts to move here legally into lost causes. The scams are "not only rob victims of money and trust in our system, but they undermine the integrity of our justice system," said a US official.
The initiative is based on three principles: enforcement, education and collaboration. It involves stopping the unauthorized practice of immigration law scams and prosecuting those who are responsible; educating people immigrating to the U.S. about the scams and how to avoid them; informing immigrants about the legal immigration process and where to find legitimate legal advices. A program by the immigration court system will also expand the number of local nonprofit organizations trained and certified to provide basic legal services to immigrants.
The effort led by US Citizenship and Immigration Services is starting in seven cities - New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Baltimore, Detroit, California, Texas - and will expand nationwide. It will include literature and broadcast public service announcements in Spanish, English and 12 other languages, as well as the launch of a website www.uscis.gov/avoidscams.
