According to news from US citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), there were more than 24,000 people receiving their US citizenship at ceremonies across the US in the week heading to the July 4 celebration. This special event made Independence Day become memorable Immigration Day.
USCitizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) spokesman revealed that USA immigration held 350 ceremonies to memorize the country's birth as well as the notable contribution of immigrants to the success of a young 235-year old country. "Immigrants come to work in America in search for better life and, by taking the Oath of Allegiance, embrace the rights and responsibilities of US citizenship" said Alejandro Mayorkas, USCIS Director.

That was the reason why Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) reintroduced the migration campaign named DREAM Act which would allow children of illegal immigrants in the US an opportunity to study at US colleges or to serve in the Armed Forces. Although the DREAM Act (acronym for Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors) was rejected by Republicans the last time the bill came up, many of illegal immigrants still wish to be given the chance to become true American citizens.
The DREAM Act would require applicants to:
- Have proof of having arrived in the United States before 16
- Have registered with Selective Service if male (as is required of all young men)
- Be between the ages of 12 and 30 at the time the bill is enacted
- Have graduated from an American high school, obtained a GED, or have been admitted to an institution of higher education
- Be of good moral character
A young person who meets those requirements would then qualify for "conditional status" and would be required over the next six years to:
- Graduate from a two-year community college or complete at least two years towards a four-year degree or
- Serve two years in the U.S. military
After six years, those who met at least one of those conditions would be eligible to apply for permanent resident status. After that, they could then apply for citizenship.
