A law bill was signed on Monday by Gov. Pat Quinn to set up privately funded college scholarships for children of US immigrants.
Under the bill, thousands of undocumented immigrants could afford to study in Illinois USA. As a result, the program was said to be the nation's first state-created scholarship fund benefiting either illegal or eligible immigrants.
"[It’s] certainly something that will get noticed around the country and in the Congress," says Margie McHugh of the Washington, D.C.-based Migration Policy Institute.
According to McHugh, the Illinois measure could support for the federal bill DREAM Act, which gives chance to many undocumented students and military members to get US citizenship if they arrived in the United States before age 16.
Under the measure, a nonprofit organization created by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission would take care of the scholarship funds. There would be trainings about the program given to high-school guidance counselors. In addition, the immigrant families could also join state-run college savings programs.
