The expanded US visa-waiver program into Guam for tourists from mainland China and Russia are now being evaluated by the US federal officials.
This was announced yesterday from governor Eddie Calvo's office after he testified Thursday in Washington, D.C about federal law regulating Guam's immigration policies.
According to Guam Visitors Bureau data, about 80 percent of the more than one million tourists who visit Guam annually are from Japan, but this number last month declined by 21 percent due to the March triple disasters.
Guam Visitors Bureau board member Mark Baldyga, the owner and founder of the Baldyga Group, which owns Tumon's Sandcastle entertainment complex, said that if the US visa-waiver program opened Guam to an influx of Chinese tourists, it could boost Guam's economy significantly and "without the China visa waiver, I'm concerned about the future of Guam".
"Even one-percent market share of China's 55 million outbound tourists and Russia's 13 million can translate into GDP growth in the billions," Governor Calvo told the sub-committee and "Congress mandated a unified U.S. immigration policy for Guam and the CNMI, but the Department of Homeland Security has been contravening your intent".
Guam is the closest US community to China, and the United States "can set the stage for capturing market shares of China's now-65 million outbound tourists", said Calvo.
