The United States has announced its 20-year plan to improve its visa system after being found that the inefficiencies in the visa process were restricting US tourism.
This announcement was made during a visit to Australia by Janice Jacobs - assistant secretary, Bureau of Consular Affairs recently. She also addressed concerns on how the US visa process was discouraging international visitors from visiting the US, especially as it affected arrivals from developing countries such as Brazil, Russia, India and China. Jacobs stressed that they were trying to be as efficient as they could be.
Although the US has the ESTA program which makes the process of applying for entry to this country relatively quick and easy, it is only available for citizens of Visa Waiver Program countries, other foreign visitors unfortunately don't have chance to access such a simple process. The current US Visa process had been found to be not only tedious, but also uncertain and very costly. The waiting period for getting US visas is sometimes greater than 100 days. Applicants for US visas are not refunded the US visa fee of $140 even if their application for a US visa gets rejected by the US immigration department for one reason or the other. It may be noted that around 20 percent of the total US visa applications received by the US immigration department are rejected.
According to the official figures, tourism into the US accounts for 8.2-million jobs and contributes US$1.3-trillion to the country's economy. The head of the US Travel, Roger Dow, had urged the US administration for creating new jobs in the nation by reducing restrictions to international travelers. And Ms Jacobs has admitted that she is ready to introduce required changes for making the US visa system more efficient and transparent.
