According to announcement of The U.S. State Department last Friday, the Government is changing visa terms for Iranian students and exchange visitors, making it easier for them to enter and move out of the United States as an effort to improve people-to-people ties between two countries.
Previously, Iranian students and exchange visitors have been allowed to obtain single-entry visas that lasted for only three months and could be used to enter the country just one time. Under the revised policy, As of May 20, qualified Iranian applicants for "non-sensitive, non-technical fields" of study and research and their dependents will be eligible to receive two-year, multiple-entry visas. This change will expand opportunities for Iranians to study in the US at a time when record numbers of Iranian youth seek to escape repression in their own country. Whether they may actually enter the United States and exactly how long they may stay is decided by US immigration officers at their port of entry, U.S. officials said.
The U.S. State Department also said in a statement that Iranians currently in the United States on a three-month, single-entry visa in one of the F, J, and M visa categories must reapply outside the United States at a consular post in order to obtain new multiple-entry visas.
