The U.S. Consulate General in Shanghai will expand its visa application facility to help solve the surging demand in U.S. visa applications from China.
According to the local consular section officials, construction is planned to expand the visa application facility inside the Westgate Mall on Nanjing Road W in an attempt to accomodate the growing number of U.S. visa applicants. The U.S. Consul General in Shanghai Robert Griffiths stated that they had signed a lease to expand current consular facility in order to interview more applicants on a daily basis.
During the construction period, all of the office's activities will take place in another part of the office floor so that visa applicants will not experience any longer wait times or other distractions.
Nick Larsen, the local non-immigrant visa chief, revealed that the new office would double the office's current capacity. The number of interview windows will go up from 9 to 20. In addition, the office is planning to deploy more interview officers and staff to prevent the overload of work during busy application seasons.
Among all the U.S. Consular Sections in China, the Shanghai office has achieved the highest success rate for non-immigrant visa applications with more than 90 percent. Visa applicants from Shanghai and its nearby zones such as Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Anhui provinces are often well-traveled and well-educated, which make them naturally qualified to be approved, Mr. Larsen explains.
This year, the number of visa applicants from China was up by 34 percent and about 30 percent of these applications were processed by the Shanghai consular section.
