Immigrant families gathered in the fellowship hall at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Alabama to receive legal help for their immigration to the US.
There were dozens of immigrant families packed into the Church for a workshop on July 18. Issue of the workshop was about legal information relating to US immigration.
Organized by attorneys from the Alabama Appleseed organization - a nonprofit advocacy group, and law school student volunteers from the University of Alabama, the workshop in Alabama was aimed to provide local immigrants with basic knowledge of legal US immigration forms. In the workshop, US migrants were taught about how to draw up power of attorney forms in case of being deportation.
Zayne Smith, Immigration Policy Fellow of Alabama Appleseed Organization gave a typical example of deportation. Undocumented immigrants who have children born in the US can still be expelled due to their undocumented immigration status. The immigrant parents will be deported while their children who get US Citizenship are sent to state Department of Human Resources and end up in foster homes.
According to Gwendolyn Ferreti, an anthropologist and doctoral student volunteering in the workshop, this case will increase quickly as a new immigration bill goes into effect Sept 1.
The reason behind this popular case is from the shortage of US immigration information in local migrant community. Very few immigrants living in the US had power of attorney documents prepared, Smith said.
"Having power of attorney is vital to protecting your family in the event you are detained," Smith added.
"Unless you are a citizen, you can always be deported," Ferreti said. "People need to understand the legalities of it."
