U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has launched Wednesday a campaign emphasizing the benefits of being a U.S. citizen with the goal of encouraging more immigrants to become U.S. citizens and become more integrated into society.
The USCIS spokesperson Mariana Gitomer said that, according to the government's database, there are about 12.5 million permanent residents in the U.S., of whom 7.9 million are already eligible to get U.S. citizenship but haven't done so. Immigration experts say many immigrants don't apply for citizenship because they fear they don't speak English well enough or because they don't know the benefits or they haven't felt a pressing need to do so. They live and work in the U.S., raise a family while holding Green Cards but Green Card can't give them the benefit of voting, obtaining a U.S. passport to travel without restrictions, and even obtain better jobs as US citizenship can.
The national advertising campaign is aimed to raise awareness of these US immigrants about the rights, responsibilities and the importance of citizenship. The campaign runs in digital media, print and radio in a variety of languages primarily in California, New York, Florida and Texas between May 30 and Labor Day. The initiative will direct individuals to free citizenship preparation materials and other training and educational resources available on the USCIS Citizenship Resource Center.
It is the first time the US immigration agency has launched a paid advertising campaign to promote American citizenship, said Mariana Gitomer. The effort will last for three years and the funds, which amount to $11 million, are coming from an allocation made by the federal Congress in Fiscal Year 2010.
