According to a new report released by the National Foundation for American Policy (NFAP), corporate fees for US work visas are providing funding to US worker training, science and math scholarships and anti-fraud enforcement.
The report highlights the valuable contribution of the US work visa program by its fees while this program is still under political pressure to be restricted. As per the official statistics made available, US employers pay approximately $3 billion in US visa fees each year to bring skilled workers into the country. And this money has funded 58,000 student scholarships by the National Science Foundation, paid for 100,000 US workers to get training through the Labor Department and contributed $700 million in funding for anti-fraud activities.
The US work visas, commonly known as US H-1B visas allow high-skilled foreign workers to live and work in the US. The visas are temporary for a period of up to six years and can result in a US Green Card if an employer sponsors the worker. Because of such contribution, the report further maintains that the Government should support the US immigration procedures that allow US businesses to recruit more skilled immigrants in the US.
H-1B Visas have been criticized as allowing employers to replace American workers with cheaper employees. However, another fact worth consideration is that such US immigrants do not take the jobs from the native US workers and rather complement the US workforce, stated Stuart Anderson - the executive director of the NFAP. And many US businesses also maintain these foreign workers are important for bringing in requisite education and skills that are not found to be available in the US.
