On August 29, 2011, the first in a series of regulations aimed at promoting e-filing of current paper-based forms with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has been published by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
The regulation changes are considered an important step toward modernizing the process of handling the more than 6 million benefit applications which are submitted by US immigrants every year.
Instead of using a paper file-based system, USCIS will launch a secure, customer-friendly online account system. Accordingly, the system will enable and encourage customers to submit benefit requests and supporting documents electronically over the next several years.
With a unique account assigned by USCIS, customers will be able to access case status information, respond to USCIS requests for additional information, update certain personal information, and receive timely decisions and other communications from USCIS.
Revising more than 50 parts of DHS regulations contained in Title 8 of the Code of Federal Regulations, the new web-based system will allow USCIS to streamline benefit processing, eliminate the capture and processing of redundant data, and reduce the number of and automate its forms.
The new regulations will take effect from November 28, 2011. Public comments and suggestions on further improvements must be submitted on or before October 28, 2011.
