What is the Next Generation TOEFL? |
ETS educational mission requires it to pursue innovations in language testing. The Next Generation TOEFL was developed because research into English language learning convinced ETS that they could create a better and more useful English language assessment. I was particularly impressed by the content of this new test because it focuses on all four language skills in a more communicative way. Basically, it is an assessment of communicative competence, which is extremely important for today's students.

What I was particularly impressed by was the test's assessement of reading, writing, listening and speaking skills using more real-life tasks. For example, in one test, students may watch a university lecture that takes place in a real university classroom. Students are first asked to complete an activity about the lecture as part of their listening task. Following this task, students may then be asked to explain something about the lecture, and this will be the speaking assessment.
In order to assess reading and writing skills, students may be asked to answer questions by, for example, fill-in-the blanks about a text and perhaps write a for/against type of essay about what is discussed in the text. When we think about the tasks a student has to complete in college, we see that all four of the above tasks are similar. I found this particularly interesting and extremely useful for the future. It seems that students who do well in the Next Generation TOEFL will be better equipped for actual college work.
