College Rejection

Rejection. It's a cold word, even if a college tells you that it had a record number of applications and that it could have filled its class three times with qualified applicants.

There're Good News?

While you may not want to hear this, it can actually be good to get rejected. Some students do get into all of the colleges they apply to, but what that often means is that they underapplied - meaning that they could have been more ambitious in their choice of colleges. Additionally, there are some questions you can ask the college about your rejection that can turn the situation to your advantage.

Ask for a Second Interview

If you believe that your application was not given full consideration or if you absolutely want to attend a specific school, then you could consider an appeal. Schools usually have a review process - though it may not lead to a change in the outcome. Nonetheless, it is an opportunity to get that second look.

Investigate Transfer Options

It's often easier to get into a particular college or university as a transfer student. If you have your heart set on a specific school, you may stand an excellent chance as a transfer student.

What Would Have Improved Your Chances

Ask for an explanation about the rejection. Was it the courses you took, or something in your essay? That kind of information is crucial if you plan to apply as a transfer student. In the meantime, take comfort in the fact that hundreds of thousands of people get rejected each year. Rejections mean that you did challenge yourself in the admissions process. You can get a first-class education at any college or university - what's most important is what you make of the experience.
